Financial Controller

JOB-2186

Type: Permanent

Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 per Annum

Location: Middlesbrough, Teesside

Some finance roles are about keeping score.

This one is about helping build something.

We’re working with a rapidly scaling North East business that’s gone from start-up to multi-million-pound growth in a remarkably short space of time. They operate across specialist industrial and offshore projects, delivering innovative solutions into a sector where demand is accelerating fast.

The business has already secured major contracts, expanded into new premises, built manufacturing capability, and is now entering the next stage of growth. That’s why they’re looking for a Financial Controller who wants more than a routine reporting role.

This will be the first full-time finance hire within the business. You’ll work directly with the founders, helping shape the future of the finance function while bringing greater visibility, structure and control to a business moving at pace.

There is already an experienced contractor supporting the business, so you won’t be walking into chaos. A structured handover is planned, but this role does require someone who is comfortable rolling their sleeves up and taking ownership of the day-to-day fundamentals in the short term while building towards a more strategic finance function over time.

If you enjoy autonomy, variety and the chance to genuinely impact a growing business, this could be the role that accelerates your career.

What’s in it for you?

  • A genuine opportunity to build and shape a finance function from the ground up
  • Direct exposure to entrepreneurial founders and strategic decision making
  • The autonomy to improve processes, reporting and controls your way
  • Broad commercial exposure across projects, operations and manufacturing
  • A business where your input will directly influence performance and growth
  • Future progression potential as the company continues to expand
  • A fast-moving environment where no two days look the same
  • Bonus potential linked to contribution and business performance

The role

You’ll take ownership of the day-to-day finance operation while improving reporting, controls and visibility across the business.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Monthly management accounts, budgeting and forecasting
  • Cashflow management and financial planning
  • Project accounting and commercial analysis
  • Managing invoicing, payables, receivables and reconciliations
  • Supporting operational and strategic decision making
  • Improving systems, processes and reporting accuracy
  • Working closely with external accountants and advisors
  • Helping develop scalable finance processes as the business grows
  • Taking ownership of bookkeeping and transactional finance activities in the short term

What they’re looking for

This role would suit someone who enjoys operating in an entrepreneurial environment and can balance hands-on finance management with commercial thinking.

You’ll likely bring:

  • Experience within a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or management accounting role
  • Strong commercial awareness and cashflow management experience
  • The ability to operate independently and bring structure to a fast-paced environment
  • Confidence managing both strategic finance responsibilities and day-to-day finance operations
  • Experience producing meaningful management information and financial insight
  • Confidence working closely with operational stakeholders and directors
  • A proactive mindset with the ability to spot problems before they happen
  • Ideally experience within project-led, engineering, manufacturing, construction or industrial environments

Fully qualified accountants are encouraged to apply, although strong qualified-by-experience candidates will also be considered.

This is a fully office-based role in Middlesbrough.
